
Preparing for B School admission
Apart from your performance in the Written Test, Group Discussion and Personal Interview are critical and very important part of the selection process of most of the B schools. Weightage given to GD and Interview varies from one B- School to another, by and large it is in the range of 30-40% of the total weight age. Therefore importance of GD and Interview preparation cannot be ignored, preparation for these two should be done seriously and leave no stone unturned.
Group Discussion
Group Discussion is a course of action and round-table discussion to put forward your opinion on a particular topic in a rational, logical and mature manner. Usually the numbers of students participating in a Group Discussion are 10-15 which varies from school to school. Basically the topics for the Group Discussion can be divided into three categories.
Article based - In article based GD students are given any article from recent newspapers clippings to discuss.
Topic Based - Students may be given knowledge based topic relating to education/social trends/fashion/Sports or current events etc.
Case studies or Situation based - Students are given some cases or situation to discuss.
Tips for participating in Group Discussion
1. Appearance & Approach - One must be dressed up smartly and present yourself with positive attitude.
2. Cool and Calm - Keep yourself calm, maintain good sitting posture and adapt your tone well.
3. Be Natural - Be natural and don’t try to be artificial.
4. Communicate with related content - Don’t try to gain attention by speaking at the top of your voice but present your view softly and logically which should be related to the topic.
5. Be a good listener - Don’t be impatient and unless you are a good listener it will be difficult to place your points to the views expressed by other participants.
Personal Interview
Personal Interviews of the applicants have become a strong tool for both MBA aspirants and admission committee representatives to take final decision for the admission.
1. Dress Code & Body Language - Neatly ironed business suits or dress with good fitting to give a good appearance is suggested.
2. Be Natural - Always be honest and sound honest in answering because interviewers have sharp judgments to see through your masks.
3. Approach towards Interview - Healthy conversation should be the theme of admission interview and with the understanding that the people sitting on the other side of the table are interested in knowing you.
4 .Prepare and Practice - Well prepared candidates will always stand out from crowd. Practicing mock interviews is must or joining coaching centre is advisable. Answers on questions to the programme applied must be on your fingertips along with the general interview questions such as strength and weakness, career goals, work experience related, why MBA etc
